UNDERSTRENGTH Pewsey were left sweating on the results of others as they blew their final chance to escape the Premier Division's bottom four on Saturday 26 April.

The home side needed to win their last game of the season in order to move out of the relegation zone, but may yet be spared Division One West football by Hellenic League officials.

Bottom two Bicester and Wantage are doomed, while third from bottom Gloucester United will resign at the end of the season.

If Swindon Supermarine avoid relegation from the Dr Martens Western Division or second-placed Yate win promotion, Pewsey will be needed to make up the numbers in the Premier Division.

Pewsey boss Steve Wootton is taking nothing for granted, but is hoping his men will be granted a stay of execution.

He said: "I don't know what will happen at this present moment. Supermarine and Yate could help us. But it is always nice if you can achieve it under your own steam and not have to rely on others to do it for you.

"We haven't done ourselves any favours this year and it is down to us. If we do stay up, I'd be looking to bring in a few more players and get them fit, because there is a lack of fitness at the moment."

Abingdon took the lead in the 11th minute when Andy Marriott powered a shot past Dave Hunt following a corner by Ryan Curtis.

They doubled their advantage just before the half hour when defender Chris Oram was controversially adjudged to have handled inside the area and Curtis converted from the spot.

James Organ made it three before the break, but Pewsey top scorer Barry Flippance pulled one back on the hour.

Craig Wall had a goal disallowed with ten minutes to go, and Abingdon wrapped up their win with late goals from Pete Moss and Marriott.

Said Wootton: "We didn't play very well, but we were missing a couple of players and that didn't help. If we had our strongest side week-in, week-out, then we'd hold our own."
