The Wiltshire gun amnesty came to an end yesterday and the number of guns handed in across the county reached 304, including 13 illegal weapons.

A total of 3,773 rounds of ammunition were also surrendered to the police.

The month-long firearms amnesty aimed to help rid the streets of illegal guns.

The banned weapons were all handguns, while the non-prohibited weapons included a mix of rifles, air rifles, air pistols and imitation guns.

A grenade and a shell were among the ammunition handed in.

The amnesty comes as tough new gun laws are set to be introduced so people could hand in illegal or unwanted firearms without facing prosecution.

Acting Deputy Chief Constable for Wiltshire, Stephen Long, said: 'This national amnesty is a joint police and Government initiative to rid our streets of both illegally-held and imitation firearms .

"We are very much encouraged by the results which we have had."

He said people who have handed in the weapons have avoided the likelihood of prosecution in the future.
