NIGHTCLUB doorman and agricultural contractor Andrew Stewart was spared a driving ban after he was caught speeding.

Stewart, whose parents live in Devizes, could have been banned from driving by magistrates after he was clocked driving at 61mph in a 30mph limit in Avebury.

But he pleaded with the magistrates not to ban him because he needed to drive to the various jobs he did and without a driving licence he would not be able to work to pay off debts of over £34,000.

Stewart, 38, pleaded guilty at Kennet Magistrates Court in Devizes to speeding on November 22 on the A4361 in Avebury.

The court heard he was approaching Avebury Village Hall at 11.15am and had just entered the 30mph speed limit when a police speed laser gun recorded his speed.

The court was told that Stewart uses his parents' home in Caen Hill, Devizes, as a postal address and was currently living rent free in a mobile home at Cirencester.

Mike Redpath, defending, said: "Mr Stewart is a self employed agricultural contractor and a door manager of night clubs. He was off work for a time last year due to illness and he has ended up with debts of £34,210.

"He is extremely concerned about being disqualified from driving because he won't be able to do his jobs."

Stewart told the magistrates that his jobs took him all over the country and he needed a licence to be able to drive to them.

He said: "I'm going to pay my debts off in the next couple of years but I can only do that if I have a driving licence."

Magistrates endorsed his driving licence with six penalty points, fined him £260 and ordered him to pay £35 prosecution costs.
