Swindon is set to come alive with festivals, concerts and exhibitions as Swindon Artscape has a host of events lined up for the summer.

Artscape, which was formed in September 2000 and is run by Swindon Borough Council, aims to open up the world of art in all its forms.

These include visual, performing and public art.

Artscape manager Celia Yeoman explained: "The whole idea behind Swindon Artscape is to bring artists and local people together.

"Art creates debate and that's the whole point behind it.

"But not everyone will like the same style of art."

The Summer Show, comprising a selection of work from Swindon Artists Forum, opened on Tuesday in the Wyvern Theatre's Lower Foyer and runs until May 31.

The Wyvern is also currently home to Panoramas, a selection of Tony Leggett's specially digitally enhanced interiors and exteriors, which ends on May 24.

World Music at the Bowl is promising to be just as exciting as previous years.

Bands such as The Soul Brothers, from South Africa, Morgan Heritage from Jamaica and Colombian Roberto Pla's Ensemble are preparing to entertain crowds at the Town Gardens, Old Town, between June 7 and August 16.

The council's performing arts officer Toby Rathbone said: "It's such a great venue and this year we have some fantastic acts booked.

"People have got used to it now and look forward to the summer season."

The Old Town Gardens will once again be in full swing for the Swin-don Mela on August 2.

Bhangra dance, dhol drumming and Bollywood music will feature alongside a children's funfair and stalls from 12pm until 6pm.

Swindon's Summer Festival 2003 promises to be a dazzling array of international street theatre, comedy and music in the town centre from July 15 to July 20 and all of it will be free.

This includes a cabaret and comedy act, Ole, and thong-wearing acrobats Skate Naked.

Tickets for World Music start at £5.50. Exhibitions are free.
