A Calne youth who was arrested for drink driving by police in the early hours of Easter Sunday, has been disqualified from driving for 18 months.

The 17 year old, who only had a provisional driving licence, was in the car with his 19-year-old sister when the police did a random check at 1am on April 20.

He was breath tested and found to be almost twice over the limit.

At Chippenham Magistrates Court on Tuesday Jane Warren, prosecuting, said the defendant was arrested and taken to the police station.

She said his breath test revealed he was nearly twice over the legal limit.

The youth admitted the drink driving charge and, although he was driving with L-plates, his sister was not old enough to supervise him and he was also charged with driving not in accordance with his licence.

This in turn made his insurance invalid and he was charged with driving without insurance.

John Elliott, defending, said the defendant did not realise his insurance was invalid.

"He realises that he should not have been drinking. He does not have a drinking problem.

"He was just socialising and thought he was okay," said Mr Elliott.

The youth pleaded guilty to all three charges and was sentenced to a three-month referral order and 18-month driving disqualification.

He was ordered to pay £55 costs within 28 days.
