COMMUNITY-minded youngsters set to work clearing up litter around the new Stokes Croft estate in Calne.

Westlea Housing Association joined forces with Barnardo's community worker Sarah Elliott to organise the clean-up session, on Thursday.

The children, aged between four and 11, picked up two black bags full of discarded crisp packets, bottles and other rubbish, which had been making the area untidy.

The last tenants moved into the new Westlea homes last November - but litter bins will not be installed until May.

Ms Elliott's own children, Lawrence, eight, and Cory, five, joined the litter-picking team.

Sue Howlett, the tenant services officer at Westlea, helped out at the clear-up.

Later she also drew the winners of an Easter quiz competition in which the children had to answer a series questions about Calne.

The winner was Jordan Braide and his prize was a pizza meal for his whole family.

Nicola Bennett, who came second, received a Dairy Milk Easter egg, and Elley-May Timmins won a Mars Easter egg for coming third.

Mrs Elliott has already organised a variety of social events for youngsters on the estate, as part of her role as community worker.

They recently enjoyed a trip to the cinema and more events are planned in the future.
