TWO environmentalists have written a an A to Z recycling directory showing families which part of their household rubbish can be recycled and how.

Items included in the ten-page directory range from aluminium cans to how people can recycle old editions of the Yellow Pages. It also includes tips and useful information, including how glass can be recycled indefinitely.

The idea came from mother-of-three Jo Parkinson and Calne town councillor Joanna Heselwood, who are both members of North Wiltshire's Friends Of The Earth.

Mrs Parkinson, 35, of Hungerford Road, Calne said a copy of the A5 booklet, which is made of recycled paper, will shortly be delivered to every household in Calne and details will also be posted on the town's website.

"It's very easy to use," she said. "You can look up Christmas Trees and it will tell you that you can contact the Friends Of The Earth who organise a Christmas Tree shredding day in the town every year.

"It's an A-Z of ordinary everyday things you can recycle or reuse, including clothes, shoes, egg boxes and coat hangers, and how you can go about doing it.

"For some items like aluminium cans you can even make yourself a few pounds by collecting and recycling them, which is all in the directory."

Mrs Parkinson said the two women originally thought of going into schools to get children interested in recycling. But rather than putting together a package just for youngsters they decided to make something everyone in the town could use.

The project received a grant of £2,000 from the Millennium Awards Scheme.
