SWINDON pop star Billie Piper and her DJ husband Chris Evans are just two of the stars who have pledged their support for the Abby Smith Cancer Fund.

Now the list of supporters reads like a celebrity Who's Who. Stars including David and Victoria Beckham, Melinda Messenger, Barbara Windsor and Sting are helping the fund, set up in little Abby's name after she died from cancer last summer, aged three.

Swindon golfer David Howell handed over his donations in person after he drove round to see Abby's family.

Other supporters include actors Martin Kemp, David Jason, Tracy Shaw and Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith. Sporting heroes including former footballers Gary Lineker and Kevin Keegan, and boxer Frank Bruno, have also sent in donations to be auctioned for the fund.

Film producer David Puttnam sent a signed copy of his book The Undeclared War and a letter to the family.

Abby's mum Helen Smith, 34, from Abbey Meads, said she was overwhelmed by the generosity shown by both Swindon folk and celebrities.

Helen, who has returned to work part-time as a primary school teacher at Haydonleigh School, said: "I've been so impressed with these celebrities who have taken the time out to write letters to me. I know they are all busy so it does mean a lot."

Abby became ill at the end of December 2001 and was soon diagnosed with a brain tumour. After months of intensive radiotherapy and surgery she died at home on July 24 last year.

The fund is raising money for the Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Movement (CALM) and Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital, where Abby was treated. Donations will be raffled or auctioned at Lydiard House on June 27. Tickets cost £10, and are available from Helen on Swindon 526571.

Donations can be sent to the Abby Smith Cancer Fund, Royal Bank of Scotland, Commercial Road, Swindon. Sort code 16-33-11, account number 100 73 212.
