TWO new appointments have been announced at Swindon Council's much-criticised social services department.

Last year, the department was condemned in a Government report as one of the worst in the country.

But since then new staff have been brought in to help turn things around.

Graham Pearson has been appointed as assistant director of adult services. He is currently working in the same post at North Somerset Council.

Jean Pollard has been appointed assistant director for children and families. She is currently principal officer for children at Bristol Council.

Swindon Council previously announced the appointment of Keith Sherman as the new director of social services. He takes over next month.

Lead councillor for social services Steve Allsopp said: "I am pleased that we have been able to recruit people of such high calibre and will ensure that the organisation will move forward."
