I THOUGHT you and your readers would like to know that the silent art auction held on April 24 in aid of my Mayoral charity the League of Friends of Chippenham Hospital raised the wonderful sum of £3,000.

But these things don't just happen and a lot of people put a lot of time and effort into ensuring the event was a success.

The auction was organised by my wife, the Mayoress, with the help of professional artist and curator Syrah Arnold.

More than 50 professional, semi-professional and amateur artists donated pieces of their work 60 per cent of which were sold.

The event was held in the Cause Arts and Music Centre, Chippenham, which was loaned to us for three days, free of charge, by Norma Guscott who, with her husband Fred, owns the centre.

Other valuable support came from the helpers who turned out to set up the exhibition, invigilate on the day and then dismantle everything afterwards.

Publicity is, of course, essential and DAC Stationery of Chippenham printed posters and flyers for us free of charge, while the press (including the Gazette) gave the event extensive coverage.

The most important people were those members of the public who made bids with such enthusiasm.

Without their generosity the day would not have been the outstanding success it so clearly was.

My thanks go to everyone who supported this very worthy cause in some way or other.

There were some items unsold and for details telephone Karin Meek on (01249) 655331 during the next two weeks.
