A 17-year-old caught drink driving by police in the early hours of Easter Sunday has been disqualified from driving for 18 months.

The Calne youth, who only held a provisional driving licence, was in the car with his 19-year-old sister when he was stopped in a random police check at 1am on April 20.

He performed a breath test and was found to be almost two times over the limit.

Jane Warren, prosecuting, said the defendant was arrested on the spot and taken to the police station.

She said his breath test registered an alcohol reading of 66. The legal limit is 35.

He was driving with L-plates on his vehicle but, as his sister was not old enough to supervise him, he was also charged with driving without a licence and insurance.

John Elliott, defending, said the defendant did not realise his insurance was invalid.

He said: "He realises he should not have been drinking. He was just socialising and thought he was okay."

The youth pleaded guilty to all three charges and was sentenced to a three-month referral order and disqualified from driving for 18 months.

If he completes a driving rehabilitation course in the next year, his disqualification will be reduced to 14 months.

He was also ordered to pay £55 costs within 28 days.
