POLICE are urging people in Trowbridge to be more careful in order to prevent opportunist crimes.

They believe the number of mobile phones and bicycles stolen in the town could be reduced if owners were more security conscious.

Inspector Jon Tapper of Trowbridge police said: "This sort of crime is opportunist and if people were more careful some of it would not happen."

Between September 1 and February 28, 36 mobile phones were reported stolen, but many of these had been left in pubs.

Insp Tapper said: "It seems a lot of them were left unattended on tables, or at the bar, or forgotten by their owners who then went back to find them gone."

Over the same period there were 28 reported bicycle thefts.

Police found a significant number of bikes had been left outside supermarkets, with little or no security.
