THE family of a young fitness fanatic who collapsed and died at her Trowbridge home still do not have the answers they are looking for.

An inquest into the death of Michelle Shergold, 34, held in Trowbridge on Tuesday concluded she died of unascertained natural causes.

Her mother, Pauline Roberts, who lives in Dilton Marsh, said: "We didn't expect a lot more. It would have been good to have a reason, but we have to accept this verdict.

"We were all pretty upset, we were hoping they might be able to say 'yes, it was a heart attack' or 'yes, it was such and such'."

Miss Shergold's body was found on the floor of her Paxcroft Way home on September 6 by work colleagues who went to investigate when she didn't turn up for her job at Nutricia, on the White Horse Business Park.

She was a fitness fanatic who went to the gym most days, ate healthily and didn't drink or smoke.

Tests ruled out drugs or any other substance that might have caused her death, leaving police and her family baffled.

She was described as a happy, popular person who had lots of friends and shared a happy home with two other tenants.

She was one of six children and her family, which is very close-knit, were devastated both by her death and by the apparent lack of any reason why she should have collapsed and died.

Mrs Roberts said: "It makes it worse in some ways that she was so fit and healthy. If someone is a sickly person you can understand it better." Mrs Roberts added that her other children are struggling to cope with their loss and she doesn't think the family will ever completely come to terms with what has happened.

"It still doesn't seem true. It is as if she has actually gone away on a long holiday.

"We keep expecting her to walk back through the door," she said.

One suggestion has been that Miss Shergold's death was due to Sudden Adult Death Syndrome, a rare and often unexplainable adult version of cot death.

DC Paul Clifford, of Trowbridge police, said: "Sometimes medically these things are not black and white and we cannot always explain why people sometimes die for no apparent reason.

"We hope that medical research will progress and give this family the answers they seek."
