Cat and dog owners are being urged to get their pets micro chipped as part of RSPCA Week.

Cut-price micro chipping will be on offer at the Walcot Dome Community Centre, Burghley Close, on Saturday.

The service will cost £12.50 a saving of around 50 per cent.

It will be the tenth micro chipping session held by RSPCA volunteers in Swindon.

So far in Swindon around 700 cats and dogs have been micro chipped.

A collection box will be at the Dome for people to donate pet food.

The RSPCA recommends micro chipping as the most permanent and tamper-proof way of identifying your pet for the rest of its life.

Pets can be reunited very quickly with their owners if they get lost or stray, as a scanner passed over the animals will quickly reveal whether it has been micro chipped or not.

If the scanner detects a chip it will beep a unique number relating to an animal is displayed.

The number, along with all the ownership details is stored on a national database called PetLog.

RSPCA volunteers will also be collecting at Tesco, Ocotal Way on Saturday from 9am, and on Sunday from 10am.

RSPCA Week runs until Sunday.
