Swindon junior chess international Daniel Hall shared the runners-up spot with players up to three years his senior in the National Squad championships held in Oldham.
Daniel, 13, of Old Town, scored four points out of six to finish a point behind the three joint winners in the national under 16 championships.
In the Under 12 event, Swindon's newest chess international, Lewis Martin, of Grange Park, overturned a shaky start to finish equal ninth, with 4 1/2 points out of 7.
Two other Wiltshire players also scored 50 per cent or more in the invitation-only championships. Daniel's brother, Joshua, 14, and Jeremy Appleyard, 16, of Standlake, both scored 3 out of 6 in the Under 16s.
