BATH COMBINATION CUP: CHIPPENHAM lifted the Bath Combination Cup on Wednesday night, beating Wiltshire neighbours Trowbridge 19-0 in a hard-fought final on The Rec.

Trowbridge, playing on the Rec for the first time, posed plenty of problems early on for Chippenham, who play two divisions higher in the league structure, before Chippenham's superior fitness told in the second half.

Chippenham led 7-0 at the break, thanks to a converted try from captain Rupert Crockett.

Chippenham gained possession from loose play and the forwards quickly recycled the ball before linking up with the backs, giving Crockett the chance to go over.

James Barnard added the conversion.

The second try came in similar fashion as the Chippenham forwards finally took control of the game.

A series of drives, rucks and mauls drove Chippenham forward and it was young flanker John Gibbons who claimed the touchdown.

The forwards again combined to set up the third try, winger Dave Spiers finishing well.

After the match Chippenham's Scott Sharratt paid tribute to the Trowbridge team.

"I thought they played very well and gave us a real battle,' he said.

"Their forwards fought for everything and they caused us some problems.

"They had a tidy little scrum half and a hard running full back and we certainly knew we had been in a game.

"In the end I think it was our superior fitness and greater experience at these sort of matches that saw us through."
