WEYMOUTH assistant Michael Watson shrugged off a back injury to win the first West Region Pro-am of the year at The Player's Club but then missed the cut in the main event.

He was the only player to better par in a star field that included former Ryder Cup player Gordon Brand Jnr who shot 76.

Watson returned five birdies on the second, third and eighth to be out in one-under 36. He came home in 34 with birdies at the 12th and 13th.

He said: "I managed to get through without too much of the back pain that has affected me this winter."
