HELLENIC LEAGUE: PURTON completed a hectic week with a 5-0 win over Kidlington.

It was the club's sixth game in seven days in which they gained a maximum 18 points to secure third place in Division One West.

The sequence started with a 3-0 away win against Cheltenham Saracens last Saturday.

That was followed with victories over Witney United (3-1 on Monday), Middle Barton (2-1 on Tuesday), a 9-1 hammering of Addersbury Park on Wednesday and a 1-0 success against Clanfield on Thursday.

Purton Boss Alan Clarke said: "It was a great finish from the lads and it was a credit to them to keep going all the week. We finished third in the table and although it was pleasing I felt we let ourselves down with a few poor results midway through the season.

"I did think of calling it a day, but after the game against Kidlington we all sat in the dressing room and all the players said they would all sign on next season and give it a go to try and win the league, so I changed my mind. It's a great club with a lot of loyal supporters and the team spirit over the last few weeks has been brilliant."

The club's player of the season Mark McMeeking swapped his central defender's shirt for the goalkeeping jersey for the second time when he took over in goal from the injured Luke Alford in the game against Kidlington.

Purton took the lead on 13 minutes when the visiting keeper Vinny Murphy made a hash of gathering a harmless looking ball and Lee Curtis was on hand to tap into an empty net.

They added a second on 24 minutes when a good cross from Eurshall Fearon was hit into the net by Craig Shand who then scored a third following a good four-man move.

Three minutes later a good effort from Fearon crashed against the Kidlington bar and Ryan Whitefield hit the rebound into the net.

The home side added a fifth when a long ball out of defence by Martin Thompson was latched onto by Shand, who lobbed the keeper from 18 yards to complete his hat-trick.

In the second half, stand-in keeper McMeeking made two good saves to deny the visitors a goal and Purton could have added to their total had they taken their chances.

Premier Division Fairford Town picked up a point in a 0-0 draw at Hook Norton in their final game to finish a creditable sixth in the table.

The Cinder Lane side fielded their reserve team at Hook leaving the first team squad more time to get over a few knocks ahead of the Gloucestershire Trophy Final against Yate.

Shrivenham finished their season with a flourish, beating Addersbury Park 6-1 on Friday and Cirencester United 4-0 on Saturday. Green (2),Tilling and Sutton were on target.

Malmesbury Vics were beaten 4-1 at Ardley and finished seventh from bottom.
