TROWBRIDGE LEAGUE: STEEPLE Ashton, who were facing almost certain relegation with four matches remaining, have produced an amazing escape act to retain their Division Two status by avenging an earlier 5-0 away defeat at Lavington and Easterton.

After three victories including a shock 3-1 midweek win over promotion chasing Dynamo West End, Ian Williams' side still had to register a fourth successive triumph to stay up and put Lavington down.

Ashton replied with a five star performance with a double from Steve Wells and one apiece from Guy Rowley who notched two against Dynamo, Lee Frisby and Anthony Pritchard.

At the top, Rudloe are the new Division Two champions. Dave Morgan's outfit clinched the title with a 3-0 and 5-1 double success over closest rivals Dynamo West End, whose four defeats in five matches now means that they have to beat Westbury United A in tomorrow's final match to decide the runners up position.

A double strike from Russell Gibbins and one from Jason Cole fashioned Rudloe's first win on Saturday while three goals in a seven minute first half spell in Tuesday's return from Matt Dancey, Cole and Gibbings put Rudloe on their way. John Price reduced Dynamo's deficit just after the break but Jason Walsh and Tim Jefferies added further goals.

For Westbury to be proclaimed runners up tomorrow, Andy Goodenough's side will have to repeat their five-goal victory over relegated Rowde Sports.

Deputy goalkeeper Sam Tucker added to Tim Coombes and Martin Little's first half goals from the penalty spot with 15-year-old Tom Brunning and Simon Alford completing United's nap hand.

Dynamo and Westbury can only match Broughton Gifford Reserves on points with goal difference looking certain to determine the race.

Dynamo who have missed their three injured front men in the final run in, possess a vastly superior goal difference to Ron Bush's Gifford who in turn have a four goal lead over United. If Gifford, who cannot be promoted, finish second, Dynamo or Westbury look set to be elevated from third place. A draw tomorrow would leave Dynamo in third spot as they have a much better goal difference than Westbury.

The Division One runners up position will also start on a knife-edge. Seend United followed up a 5-0 winning double over the Deverills with goals from Ashley Groves (penalty), Ralph Plummer, Julian Putt, man of the match Barry Holloway and Dave Jenkins with a 3-3 draw at Freshford on Tuesday.
