DEVIZES Lions Club raised thousands of pounds for local good causes on Monday when the sun shone on its annual May Day Fair.

The town fundraisers had been planning the event for the best part of a year and were up at the crack of dawn to prepare areas at the Wharf, the Market Place and the Green for the many and varied events they had planned.

They had organised more events and special appearances than ever before. As well as the annual debut of the Major Wrecks' hilarious routines, there were Morris dancers, Punch and Judy shows, and gymnastics, judo and Aikido displays at the Wharf.

New this year were kiddy karts and a street performer on stilts who moved among the crowds and entertained the children.

Lions Club treasurer Thornton Blyth said: "We are always looking to keep the event alive by adding more attractions.

"Hopefully, people who came along will think, that was great, we must come back next year.

He said that £7,400 was taken on the day, but deductions will have to be made to cover various expenses.

The Major Wrecks, the male majorettes that raise money for the charity Devizes Contact A Family, were on form with their new routines, receiving a warm welcome. The group was concerned at a lack of members, but an appeal ensured enough new recruits have come forward.

Local bands like Get This from Worton and the Devizes Samba Band were popular.

The display of classic vehicles drew a lot of interest from aficionados and laymen alike.
