MORE than one driver every three minutes has been caught speeding on Swindon's roads by police using mobile cameras to crack down on motorists flouting the law.

Three mobile cameras have been used on 11 busy roads across Swindon where speeding motorists are known to be a problem, and they helped catch 108 drivers in five hours.

On Friday, May 2, the day the operation was launched, the cameras were used on Ermin Street in Stratton, Queens Drive in Walcot and Tewkesbury Way in West Swindon.

Police caught 34 speeding drivers in Queen's Drive, 15 in Ermin Street and none in Tewkesbury Way.

Officers noted similar success on the A419 in Blunsdon and A346 at Chiseldon where they clocked 46 and 13 speeding motorists respectively. And those caught speeding face fines, penalty points and driving bans if convicted.

David Frampton, of Wiltshire and Swindon road safety partnership, said: "Unfortunately these figures are exactly in line with what we expected. Some drivers have yet to break their bad habits.

"Queen's Drive, the A419 at Blunsdon and the A346 at Chiseldon have a long history of collisions resulting in serious injuries and fatalities. Because of this, we've had fixed cameras there for a long time.

"But quite a few people have trained themselves to slow down as they approach the cameras and speed up again as soon as they've cleared them the mobile cameras are probably catching some of those offenders."

The other six sites being targeted in the operation which is set to run indefinitely include Thamesdown Drive, the A419 Stratton St Margaret bypass, the M4 between junctions 14 and 17, B4192 Liddington, A4361 in North Wroughton and the A419 at Cricklade.

Statistics reveal that for every 1mph that drivers cut down their speed there is a five per cent reduction in collisions.
