WARMINSTER has four new town councillors, but the Conservatives are still very much in control after Thursday's elections.

The Tories remain with eight of the 12 seats with the Liberal Democrats losing one of their three seats to an Independent candidate.

Unlike in previous elections the town and district votes were all counted on the night, which meant the full town result was not announced until 4.25am

In the Warminster East ward outgoing mayor Andrew Davis completed a double by topping the poll with 1,163 votes.

Cllr Davis was followed by five other Tories: Chris Marsh with 1,089 votes, Dorothea Main on 1,017, Stephen Pearson 984, Veronica Burden 875 and Dorothea Sultana De Maria 841. The latter two were elected for the first time.

Eight candidates stood for the ward's six seats with the overall turnout reaching 31.09 per cent.

Warminster West saw a greater political mix with the Tories, Liberal Democrats and Independent candidates each winning two seats.

Topping the poll was John Syme (Ind) with 846 votes. Martin Baker (Con) just edged ahead of Paul Batchelor (Lib) by 690 to 687 votes. Next up was David Lovell (Lib) on 601, who shrugged off the disappointment of losing his district council seat.

Two new councillors joined the ward in the shape of Leslie Rose (Ind) with 594 votes and William Parks (Con) on 577.

Cllr Rose said: "I went to all 3,641 homes in the ward and delivered the leaflets myself. In four weeks and two days I walked over 200 miles. "

Twelve candidates stood in the ward, which had an overall turnout of 28.7 percent.
