CHILDREN at Crockerton Primary School, near Warminster have worked with a professional artist to produce five mosaic slabs for the school.

A group of 16 pupils aged seven to 11 worked with Salisbury based artist Joanna Dewfall for five weeks leading up to Easter.

Each mosaic depicts a different scene: a road track, a maze, a chessboard, an airport and a football match.

The mosaics will be laid in the lawn of the school's Peace Garden, a quiet area of the grounds where children can sit and talk.

Ms Dewfall worked with the school as part of the South West Participatory Arts Workshop Scheme. The district council sponsored scheme meant that the school only had to pay for the materials used.

The mosaic was part of the school's Freaky Fridays project designed to promote art in the school's curriculum.

Headteacher Val Culff said: "The opportunity to work with a professional artist was invaluable for the children, it was a once in a lifetime experience for them. This was all part of our drive to broaden the curriculum and stop the arts being squeezed out."

The school received another boost this week, winning a School Achievement Award from the Department For Education and Skills for a third year in a row.
