SPRING sunlight can be a wonderful thing, but it is unflinchingly honest. The same ray of sunshine that illuminates a garden will also show up its flaws.

The same is true of a car. During the winter, the condition of a car can deteriorate, but thanks to the dull light and inhospitable weather motorists may not see, or have the inclination to deal with the various environmental insurgents attacking their vehicle.

While dirt and grime can build up almost unnoticed inside and out, the strain of the cold weather and unfriendly condition of roads can lead to minor mechanical problems appearing. If not dealt with quickly, these could escalate to something more serious.

As the car is basked in sunlight, take a hard look at it. According to Matthew Carrington, chief executive of the Retail Motor Industry (RMI) it is the perfect time.

He said: "Take the opportunity to give your car a once-over to see what needs working on. The exterior of the car may need attention, and thanks to the weather, motorists will be able to see what they are doing.

"The underside of the car will have borne the brunt of the winter months. Salt, snow, chemicals and grit may have lodged in the underside and wheel arches. To avoid corrosion, any dirt should be removed as quickly as possible. Hose down the entire underside."

Tyre pressures also need consideration. "Tyre pressures will need to be checked and it is possible that they could need realigning," said Mr Carrington.

"They should also be thoroughly looked over for any damage, such as cuts or splits."

The interior of the car may also need some consideration.

Mr Carrington said: "It is a good idea to clean out a

vehicle whenever the chance arises. An airing, as well as a thorough vacuum will make a difference."

Motorists who feel that they could use some professional help when preparing their car for the warmer weather should visit an RMI member garage.

All members pledge to observe the Code of Practice of the Motor Industry, which is endorsed by the Office of Fair Trading.

A member will be able to advise you on the type of service you need and will be able to point out potential problem areas before they arise, or become serious.

Whether you want to buy or sell a new or used car or motorcycle, service or repair your existing vehicle, find an auction house, or a cherished number plate dealer, an RMI member garage will be help you.
