SHREWTON United began their new campaign, in the Screwfix Western division One, with a tricky away trip to a Corsham side quietly fancied to be at the top of the table at the end of the season.

This ground has been a happy hunting ground for United in the past, beating the reserve side last season as well as lifting the Addkey Cup there at the end of last season to complete their league and cup double.

United had taken a lot of support with them to Corsham, resulting in a sense of excitement and optimism buzzing around the ground.

And so it began, Shrewton United's first game in this league.

The first 15 minutes were strongly in Corsham's favour as the home side began on the front foot and tested United's defence, which had changed over the summer and only played three friendly games together before this tough test. However, they looked as though they had played together for many a season with veteran, Brian Blake, shouting the orders to his two colleagues, Martin Bragger and debutant Ben Halski, showing old heads on young shoulders.

United began to get a grip on the game and stepped up to the frantic pace, allowing them to match Corsham in the midfield.

Luke Kerley and Anton Brownless starting to command the centre of the park with the same confidence that shook the Wiltshire league last season.

The frantic pace continued throughout the half with both sides going close with both Dean Foot and Jess Walters giving the home defence a scare with their threat in front of goal.

The half time whistle blew with the score line goalless.

The second half began with the same busy pace of the first, thouth the majority of the play contested in the midfield.

Corsham's presence in the league had obviously improved their fitness and this began to show in the later stages of the second period and chances started to appear.

They were fortunate to be given a corner with 20 minutes to go, after the referee signalled the ball had bounced off a United defender. Corsham capitalised on this spot of fortune when the resulting corner was headed home after being tipped onto the cross bar.

United were shaken as this 1-0 score line did not reflect the match itself.

United manager, Stuart Withers, then made two inspired substitutions bringing both Mike Brownless and Lee Weekes off the bench to freshen his side up. Both players had an immediate effect on the game confusing the Corsham defence.

This put Shrewton back on the front foot and panicked Corsham.

With time running out, up popped Shaun Collins, dancing through the defence, although it looked like he had been pushed too wide to finish off his run, but, with a sweet finish, he was able to fire the ball under the Corsham goal keeper to level the scores.

This goal kicked Shrewton into overdrive with the belief they could now win the game.

Corsham were rocked and United were not going to give them any time to steady themselves, continuously pushing for the winner.

United were awarded a free kick 25 yards out, which Nick Jones elected himself to take. His perfectly flighted ball was met with a towering header by Shaun Collins, to grab his side's second goal of the game.

United then held on for the remaining minutes to record an impressive win on their first game in the league.
