WESTLECOT ladies are through to the last 16 in the EWBA National Top Club competition.

In the last 32, staged on the neutral green at Tiverton West End, they beat Cornish champions Newquay Ladies 3-1.

Westlecot will now meet Bridport (Dorset), who beat Caer Glow (Gloucester), in the next round.

The winners of that match will claim a place in the quarter-finals which will be played at Leamington Spa.

Despite the 3-1 scoreline, Westlecot far from had things their own way.

Only in one of the four disciplines, namely triples, were they always in control.

The trio skipped by Rosemary Nichols were 17-3 up at 11 ends and led 20-14 going into the last end but then dropped a five but it made little difference.

In the singles, Anne Hayward trailed 19-18 but collected a three on the last end for a two-shot victory. And in the fours Olive Henery's rink looked in trouble as they trailed 15-7 after 13 ends but they staged a remarkable recovery on the last eight ends to pick-up 11 shots and not concede any for an 18-15 win.

The only loss came in the pairs where the scores were level at 12-12 at 13 ends, but the Newquay duo edged away for a two shot success.

While it may have been joy for Westlecot, Berkshire champions Shrivenham bowed out in the last 32, losing to holders Milton Regis.
