PURTON'S hopes of glory in the EBA national fours championship at Worthing ended in round two.

The rink of Miles Roberts, Mark Wadsworth, Chris Cheesley and Ray Sowden thumped Barnes Park (Durham) 30-12 in their first match.

But in the next they went down by two shots losing a tight game against Carlisle Courtfield 21-19.

Alderbury, Wiltshire's other representatives in the fours, were beaten 20-18 in the first round by House on the Green (Norfolk).

WESTLECOT and Wootton Bassett today begin their quest for glory at Worthing in the national triples.

The trio of Mel Biggs, Neil Hope and Mark Dyer will be looking for compensation for the club's narrow defeat in last Sunday's national final of the Top Club competition.

Westlecot's Middleton Cup trio face Warwickshire's King's Heath in the first round. Wootton Bassett's Richard Buckland, Hedley Bowen and Bob Clews play Taunton in the opening round.

TEN teams contested the Geoff Gleed Memorial Gala staged by Highworth Bowls Club.

Only four shots covered the top four rinks. Honours went to first time entrants Faringdon Tom Hayward, Brian and Barry Stallard and skip Robin De Bank with nine points and a 21 shot plus tally.

Highworth's rink of John Morgan, Gordon Pearce, Robbie Allen and Clive Humphries took second place.
