THREE Downton teams were left counting the cost of defeat at the weekend when their results in Hants & Isle of Wight League matches were crucial to divisional status for next summer.

Biggest sufferers were the ladies, whose 7-2 home defeat by Lee-on-Solent left them with only one win from the five match programme and relegation from Division 3A.

Had they reversed the scoreline in a recent 5-4 defeat by Littleton, they would have stayed up - final placings were that close.

The Downton A men's team's 6-3 defeat at Fawley by Waterside B almost certainly ended their very slim chance of promotion from Division 5B, but two wins already and sets won in a further match to come should guarantee mid-table security.

Downton B, beaten on Saturday by BTC Priestlands, lost all five matches and will be wooden spoon holders in Division 6A.

Andover A, Andover B and Goodworth Clatford are the three divisional champions after completion of last matches in the Sarum League.

Andover A completed a 100 per cent record for the season when earning their twelfth win away to Riverside B on Sunday, Andover B had finished earlier, and Goodworth sealed the Division Three title when winning at Downton B.

Roger Witt and Karina Weedon, mixed doubles champions at Salisbury Tennis Club's Finals Day, added another title to their locker on Sunday when winning the club's annual Open Mixed Doubles tournament, which attracted 15 pairs.
