Ref. 26270-11A FIRE in a social club in the Railway Village spread to an adjoining nightclub last night.
Firefighters attended the blaze at the Royal Navy and Royal Marine Social Club in East Street.
No-one was injured in the fire, which began around 6pm, but the blaze spread from the ground floor of the club to the roof of the neighbouring night spot Destiny and Desire.
There was substantial damage to the inside of both buildings and they were heavily smoke logged.
Fire investigation officers attended the scene and believe the cause will be established soon.
Station Officer Andrew Hargreaves said he believed the cause of the fire was an extractor fan.
He said: "The fire spread through rubbish piled up in an alleyway between the two buildings.
Six appliances from Swindon, Stratton, Wootton Bassett, Westlea and Marlborough as well as an aerial appliance from Oxford attended.
Firefighters used six breathing apparatus, two hose reels, one main jet and one positive pressure ventilator to combat the blaze.
They spent a couple of hours using a using a thermal imaging camera to check for hotspots in the nightclub.
