A TROUPE of baton-twirling majorettes will be one of the star attractions at a charity fun day in Calne on Saturday.

The event has been organised by Calne Town Football Social Club to raise cash for two local charities the Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Calne Community Transport.

Organisers are confident they have something for everyone at the event.

They say the varied attractions should attract all age groups.

The event will be opened at 1pm by a mystery guest.

The 40 majorettes, all from the Swindon area, will perform in an arena which will include a large stage, on the football pitch next to the club.

Next up will be a troupe of local belly dancers, which organisers say will add a little eastern spice to the proceedings.

But bonny babies will be the stars of the baby show.

There will be a number of classes for babies under 18 months.

For pet lovers there will be a dog show with several different classes at 4pm, which will be judged by a local vet.

Teams will be involved in a tug-of-war championship at 5.30pm.

Football Social Club treasurer Ann Wright, said: "It's been a lot of hard work, but it's going to be worth it.

"If we can raise some money for the two charities I'll be very pleased.

"We're expecting a lot of people and with the majorettes coming from Swindon we're hoping for a few from there.

"Hopefully the people of Calne will come out and give us their support."

As well as the main attractions there will be numerous stalls and games in the club hall and on the adjacent football pitches, including skittles, throw the welly, toss the penny and competitive plate smashing.

For the children there will also be face painting and cake decorating, where youngsters can buy a plain sponge and cover it with their own decoration in hundreds and and thousands, jellybeans and icing.

In the evening there will be a disco from 8pm to midnight, with a broad range of music.

People will also be able to buy a ploughman's supper for £1.
