BT has agreed to reinstate three public payphones it removed in Devizes but meanwhile has removed four more.
Devizes Town Council, which has fought vigorously to stop payphones being removed by BT, was appalled that the company removed four payphones before consulting its members.
The four phones which have gone were in Dunkirk Hill, Sarum Drive, at the junction of Nursteed Road/Eastleigh Road and the junction of New Park Road/Commercial Road.
After representations by Devizes Town Council and Kennet District Council, BT has agreed to reinstall three payphones at The Wharf, Nursteed Road and Brickley Lane. BT had also removed these phones before consultation had been completed.
At a meeting of Devizes Town Council's planning committee last week councillors were glad about the phones that will be reinstated but were outraged at the removal of the four others before consultation had ended.
Town mayor Paula Winchcombe said: "I don't think BT knows what consultation means. We will make strong representations to BT again."
