It may be summer, but pensioners have been told now is the time to start thinking about this year's Winter Fuel Payment.

Last year more than 1.1 million households in the South West received the Government handout, aimed at helping older people pay their heating bills over the winter.

This year anyone aged 60 or over who has not received a payment before has until September 19 to get in their applications.

Those who are already claiming a state pension or other social security benefit will not need to re-apply and will automatically receive their payment, worth at least £200.

Pensions Minister Malcolm Wicks said: "About eight million households will benefit from the £200 Winter Fuel Payment, worth around £4 per week."
