ANOTHER two motorists lost their lives this week on the roads surrounding Salisbury.

Emergency services were called to three major crashes, which resulted in several serious injuries and traffic chaos.

At 9.20 on Thursday morning, 70-year-old Anthony Conio, of Exeter Street, Salisbury, was killed when his Ford Escort collided with a Vauxhall Zafira at the junction of the A36 and the A303 at Deptford.

The crash caused the Vauxhall to overturn, although its 38-year-old driver escaped with minor injuries.

Mr Conio was rushed to Salisbury District Hospital suffering from serious head injuries but he died later in the day.

His 66-year-old wife was treated for broken bones and facial injuries.

The driver of the Zafira was released from hospital on Friday after receiving treatment for cuts and bruises.

An inquest into Mr Conio's death has been opened and adjourned.

A second accident happened on Thursday afternoon, when an Escort and a Ka collided head-on while travelling along the A338 near Britford.

Both drivers were taken to hospital suffering from serious injuries, with the Escort driver being the more badly hurt of the two.

There were long delays for motorists as the road remained closed for three hours while salvage companies removed the wreckage.

Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding these accidents and are asking any witnesses to contact them on 01722 435208.

The second fatal accident happened on Friday afternoon, when a 51-year-old motorcyclist from Essex died in a four-vehicle pile-up on the A360 a mile south of Shrewton.

Two cars and a Kawasaki motorcycle were travelling towards Airman's Cross from Shrewton when there was an accident involving them and a car heading in the opposite direction.

The motorcycle rider died at the scene and the driver of one of the cars was taken to hospital with injuries described as minor.

The two other drivers were not seriously hurt.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the accident, which happened just after 4pm.
