Ref. 14077/4A POOR turnout at a charity fun day in Trowbridge has left organisers unsure whether they will even make a profit.

But despite the small number of people who turned up at Trowbridge park on Saturday, Crime-stoppers has vowed to raise its profile in west Wiltshire.

Bill Derrick, chairman of Wiltshire Crimestoppers, said: "It was disappointing but we still saw a lot of people even though we had a short time to organise it.

"Over 80 per cent of people do not realise we are a charity.

"But without the public bringing us information we would not be there.

"We did meet a lot of young people on Saturday who came along to see local bands so it was definitely worth it."

Wiltshire Constab-ulary had a stand at the event and gave away 50 free crime prevention kits.

Police press officer Elizabeth Marginson said: "It was good to get young people involved and show them what we do."

Formed in 1986, Crimestoppers is the only crime-solving charity in the UK allowing people to phone anonymously with information.

Mr Derrick said: "Lots of people are scared to contact the police but there is no way for us to trace callers and people can tell us as little or as much as they want.

"We are hoping to do more events like this in other parts of west Wiltshire."
