Women from local WI groups turned out in force for Calendar Girls, at the Odeon in Salisbury. DA3953P1GIRL power was out in force at the Odeon in Salisbury on Friday, as ladies of the Women's Institute united for a good cause.

Nearly 100 women from local WI groups turned out to mark the release of the film Calendar Girls, a lively romp hailed as the female version of The Full Monty, and from which all profits will go to the Leukaemia Research Fund.

The film came out of the true story of Rylstone and District WI, in Yorkshire, whose members sensationally stripped off nearly four years ago to make an alternative nude calendar.

The calendar was dedicated to John Baker, the husband of one of the Rylstone members, who died in 1998 from cancer. It raised more than £250,000 for leukaemia and lymphoma research.

The sunflower remains the unofficial symbol for leukaemia research fundraising, after John grew them during his illness, in the hope that he would be well again by the time they flowered.

Money raised from sales of a new calendar for 2004, featuring photographs from the original and stills from the film, will also go to the fund.
