Steps may be taken to cut back on red-tape afflicting Swindon's magistrates courts after MP Julia Drown complained to the Government about bureaucracy.
Ms Drown raised concerns about what she called "unnecessary paperwork" in a discussion with Phil Hope, an aide to Deputy PM John Prescott.
Ms Drown, who represents South Swindon, said talks about council tax liability procedures were "very positive".
She said: "At the moment councils have to send thousands of documents to magistrates courts when people don't pay their council tax.
"For each one paperwork has to be prepared even though very
few cases come to court. It is really a way of putting pressure on people to pay.
"I think this is very bureaucratic and am sure there must be a better way of dealing with this.
"I'm pleased to say the minister does recognise this. He will be talking to the Department of Constitutional affairs to see if we can simplify the work."
The Better Regulation Taskforce, an independent watchdog set up to monitor bureaucracy, has found civil servants are hampering Government efforts to cut red tape, although ministers are trying to reduce paperwork.
