Ref. 14103/1SCHOOLS will benefit from extra classroom help after 36 teaching assistants passed their final exams in a new Learning and Skills Council initiative.

The teaching assistants, who work at primary and secondary schools across the county, passed the NVQ Level 2 after an eight-month course covering care and support in the classroom and improving numeracy and literacy skills.

Julie Jones, a teaching assistant at Neston Primary School, near Corsham, said: "I have gained confidence in myself and with the help and support given to me by the school and my assessor I feel I am a much better teaching assistant."

Wiltshire County Council paid for the courses, now in their second year, as part of the Free 2 Learn programme. Education director Bob Wolfson, who presented the awards at Trowbridge Civic Hall on Wednesday, said: "Teaching assistants provide a valuable service by helping teachers deliver the highest standards of education.

"We need to invest in training and development to get the best out of our staff, and these qualifications are part of that commitment."
