A VILLAGE primary school is leading the way in west Wiltshire after it scooped a basic skills award for the second time.
Crockerton Primary School, near Warminster, first gained the Primary Quality Mark award in 2000. Now staff and pupils are celebrating after the school became one of the first in the county to win the award again.
The Quality Mark is awarded by the Basic Skills Agency and assesses schools' basic literacy levels under 10 criteria. These range from evaluating pupil performance to involving parents in developing their children's basic skills.
Headteacher Val Culff said: "I am very proud of the staff because this award is largely down to them.
"But I am also proud of the children who have worked very hard at their basic skills."
The school has a double reason to celebrate this week after it learnt 30 Key Stage Two pupils had their poems published in a new book for Wiltshire, after entering a competition.
The school is now waiting to see if any pupils win national awards for their poetry.
