LOCAL pride is at stake as Swindon and Supermarine prepare to do battle in the Powergen Junior Vase first round at Greenbridge Road tomorrow (3pm).

And it promises to be a fiercely-contested affair too, not least because of the history between the coaching staff on both sides.

Marine forwards chief Andy Sear comes face to face with Swindon's Ian Binfield and Martin Popowich, bringing back memories of their battles in the early 1990s the last time the sides met in a league or cup game.

Sear recalled: "Swindon won both home and away and Ian played in our home fixture and Martin the away meeting.

"Since then, I have been coached by both Martin and Ian when I joined Swindon in 1995 and I am now looking forward to competing against them both again now.''

Berks, Bucks & Oxon One side Swindon will undoubtedly start favourites, especially after their thumping win over Wallingford in the league last Saturday.

But Marine will also have confidence, despite losing to Cooper-Avon Tyres last weekend their first match since being promoted to Dorset & Wilts One.

Marine name Johan Cloete at fly-half his first team debut after his move from Swindon College.

Mark Sheppard reverts to his favoured centre position and the openside flanker spot is filled by Allie Roussel after an excellent display from the bench last week.

Swindon make three changes, with their front row boosted by the return of Scott Chapman after suspension, while Nick Brooks makes his first start of the season.

In the back row, Jon Parker moves up from the bench to flanker.

Nathan Waite reclaims the fly-half spot with Stuart Cock moving to his preferred position at centre.

Skipper Paul Wakefield a hat-trick man last week moves to full back.

Elsewhere in the Vase, another Wiltshire derby takes place in Calne, where the buoyant home side, fresh from their league win at Weymouth last week, host Minety in an all-Dorset & Wilts One affair.

A third all-Wiltshire affair takes place in Melksham, as Cooper Avon Tyres tackle Corsham.

Cirencester can get their season off and running with a home victory over tough Gloucester outfit Brockworth.

In the Dorset & Wilts 2nd XV Cup, Supermarine host Swindon College at South Marston with Trowbridge awaiting the winners, and Minety entertain Cooper Avon for the right to host Swindon at the next stage.
