SWINDON'S New College which was built five metres in the wrong place is set to be granted retrospective planning permission on Tuesday night.

Last month the Advertiser revealed incorrect architects' plans led to the building in Queen's Drive being built in the wrong place. As a result the building encroaches on public open space and breached the original planning application.

Officials only recognised the error when people living behind nearby Buckhurst Field in Park North complained the building spoilt their view and asked the developers for compensation.

In theory Swindon planners could order the building, which cost £15 million and was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh earlier this year, be knocked down and built in the right place.

But they are more likely to move on from the embarrassing episode by telling the developers to give the local community some extra green space and forget about it.

Swindon's planning committee meets on Tuesday night in the Civic Offices in Euclid Street at 7pm.

The meeting is open to the public.
