SWINDON Council's health and public protection team are warning people about an illegal and dangerous sweet.

The Food Standards Agency is warning about mini-cup jelly sweets containing the ingredient konjac.

This kind of sweet was banned across Europe last year after about 20 children world-wide died from chocking. Jelly sweets made with konjac do not dissolve easily, and can become stuck in a child's throat.

Swindon Council officers are contacting shops across the borough warning them about the sweets and making sure they are not on sale.

An alert has been issued about products made by Tsang Lin Industries, including ABC Mini Fruit bites in assorted flavours, which are sold in dome-shaped plastic cups about the size of a coffee cream.

The warning also covers Cocode Nut Jellies in 408g bags.

So far there have been no reported cases of the sweets in Swindon but the council has asked parents to be alert.
