COUPLES in Melksham can continue exchanging marriage vows at the town hall after councillors said "we do" to a licence renewal request.

Marriages booked at the town hall after April 2004 were placed in doubt when town councillors asked for more information on the £1,000 licence renewal cost.

But the fee was voted through at a meeting on Monday, confirming couples can still tie the knot at the civic venue.

County Hall officials said the £1,000 fee would cover advertising, setting-up and administration costs of using the town hall for wedding ceremonies.

Cllr Davina Griffin said: "It is important the building stays available for weddings. But I cannot see re-registering costs are the same as registering."
