THE design of a new block of flats near the Steam railway museum in Swindon has been unveiled.

Langdale Housing is planning two buildings next to each other in Kemble Drive, one of four storeys and one which is up to 10 storeys high, with a range of apartments.

The flats will have slate roofs that aim to reflect the look of the nearby former railway works.

Subject to planning permission, work should begin in early 2005 and be finished in about 18 months.

Langdale's managing director Ian Thomas said: "In putting forward this scheme, Langdale is responding to the desire on the part of Swindon Council to take a leap forward in relation to architectural standards in the town and to get more cranes visible on the town centre skyline.

"While we need more high-quality design in Swindon, it is equally important that buildings get built. Only then will others have the confidence to do the same."

The buildings have been designed by London architects Maccreanor Lavington.
