THE search is on for Britain's best churchyard.

And with the ones in the Swindon area ranging from the centuries old to the recently completed the organisers of the contest are hoping for a healthy list of entries.

The competition is run by Ecclesiastical Insurance, a specialist firm which handles the insurance needs of places of worship.

Entry is open to all churches, irrespective of their denomination.

Competition spokeswoman Sarah Iles said entries had already been received from 31 dioceses up and down the country. She added: "We're looking for beauty, but also for brains.

"Many of the entries we've received so far show that a lot of thought and imagination are going into the design of many churchyards.

"Lots of great ideas are being implemented."

The first prize is £1,000, with second and third prizes of £500 and £200 and all 12 finalists appearing in the insurer's 2005 calendar.
