WARM sunshine attracted crowds to the traditional Spring Bank Holiday fete at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wootton Bassett.

The annual event raised a record £2,958.

"We're delighted," said Fr John Reville, the parish priest, who thanked the organising committee, chaired by Marie Bernhardt.

A country fair was the theme of the fete, and admission was free.

The Broad Town Belle fairground organ played while visitors relaxed with refreshments at tables in the presbytery garden.

There was a barbecue and the Wannell family's 1943 turntable ladder fire engine Martha, and a more modern appliance from the Wootton Bassett fire station were popular with the crowd.

Stalls and sideshows some staffed by helpers in old-fashioned rural dress provided bargains galore, and raffles added to the fun.

Fr Reville said: "Of course we're happy to have made so much money, but the main aim was to provide a community event for Wootton Bassett to enjoy, and to witness to our faith. We're grateful to everyone who came along."
