Brighton striker Adam VirgoBRIGHTON striker Adam Virgo is the man on which most of Swindon would like stick their chewing gum.

As part of the campaign against gum in Swindon we asked you on whose face you would most like to push your gum one possible way of dealing with the epidemic afflicting Swindon's town centre.

After three days of telephone polling over the weekend, Brighton's Virgo saw off stiff competition from current nightmare in the kitchen Gordon Ramsay.

Last week schoolchildren counted 32,500 pieces of gum in approximately 15 per cent of the town centre.

It was part of town centre manager Bernie Maguire's binIT campaign to clean up the town centre.

Mr Maguire is hoping to raise awareness of the state of Swindon and persuade the town's residents to take more pride in the area.

Many other local councils use similar posters to encourage people to stick their gum there, rather than throw it on the floor and Swindon Council says it is investigating this option.

l Liberal Democrat Coun Stan Pajak has welcomed the recent Advertiser campaign to rid the streets of Swindon's town centre from chewing gum.

He says he presented a fully costed report to council officers in February for a trial scheme to combat chewing gum waste.

"My project would have cost £9,500 for a year. But council officials have not acted on it yet," he said.

"I welcome the research from school children at Drove and Ruskin primary schools as part of the BINit campaign. Chewing gum on our streets is a sickening mess and makes the town look like a waste ground.

"If I had my way I would fine people who spit out gum £100."
