GAZETTE & HERALD: A MAN who took a job with a salary of £22,000 a year continued to receive housing benefit and council tax benefit, a court heard.

Paul Arnold, of Pockeridge Road, Corsham, started work on June 16, 2003 at Colas Ltd and stayed with the company for almost four months.

But during the period he was employed he failed to make any payment of rent to his landlord and housing benefit continued to be paid, Chippenham magistrates were told last Tuesday.

In total he was overpaid £949.76 housing benefit and £216.58 council tax, magistrates heard.

Arnold admitted failing to promptly notify North Wiltshire District Council of a change in circumstances which he knew would affect his entitlement to housing benefit and council tax benefit.

He was ordered to pay back the total of £1,166.34 owing, plus £75 costs, and given a 24-month conditional discharge.

North Wiltshire District Council's benefit fraud team's investigations have led to more than 20 successful prosecutions in the last 12 months.
