DEVIZES Town's invincible U9s have swept all before them to win the Badger League.

The super side won 15 of their Badger League matches and only dropped two points all season, when they drew with the eventual runners up Amesbury.

All the games are seven-a-side and Devizes Town are in the league's blue division, made up of teams based in South and Mid Wiltshire.

Coach Pete Webb said he is very proud of his squad of 17 players and put its success down to the fact that they play in the Mid-Wiltshire League at the same time, which he said is a higher standard.

"I can't put my finger on it exactly, but we were better than anyone else in the league," Webb said.

He explained that the team finished fourth in the Mid-Wiltshire League this season, where games are played on Saturdays, and the Badge League was a great opportunity to develop his players on Sundays.

Having won the Badger so emphatically this season the coach said one of his main aims next season is to finish higher up the Mid-Wiltshire League. "We have some very talented players in this age group, but we are always on the lookout for more players," he said. "The kids all love their football, but it was really a team effort."

The team went on tour earlier this month to Bognor Regis where they played against teams from across the UK in a three-day tournament.

Devizes finished third in their group and were presented with trophies from Southampton striker James Beattie. Mr Webb paid tribute to the strength of local businesses in the community who gave their cash to fund the tour, including the Spar Shop, in Bath Road, Cart Builders, Avon Trophies and the Sports Shop. He also thanked kit sponsors Sarsen Housing Association.
