GAZETTE & HERALD: Flashing speed signs could be placed in a residential area in Calne in a bid to slow down traffic.

The town council is looking at road safety in Abberd Way and Prince Charles Drive following consultation on traffic calming.

One option is to install a raised junction at The Knapp but under Government regulations this would need to be supported by other traffic calming measures and could cost around £60,000.

Another idea is to install a traffic speed indicator, similar to that on London Road, Chippenham, which flashes when a vehicle is travelling too fast.

Martin Rose, principal traffic engineer at Wiltshire County Council, spoke to the town council about the options at a meeting last week.

He suggested a speed indicator would be a good starting point but, if the problem of speeding persisted, a raised junction could be reconsidered.

Coun Paul Atkinson, chair of the planning and economic regeneration committee, suggested that the council look carefully at the options before making any decisions.

Deputy town clerk Linda Wakefield also advised the council to be cautious.

"It is crucial that the correct traffic calming measures are installed and it is much better to take a little longer in the consultation and decision making process," she said.

"It is far more costly to remove traffic calming measures than it is to install them."

Members agreed to ask the traffic calming working group to look at the options more closely.

Other improvements in the town centre to be carried out include repainting yellow lines to stop illegal parking.

A Calne Access for All meeting is being held on June 10 to discuss problems of getting around the town centre and the need for further dropped kerbs.
