FORMER veterinary nurse Lorraine Spencer is now properly installed in the new headquarters of her cat sanctuary, Devizes Kats and Kits in Care, and is looking for more volunteers to help her look after the 67 waifs and strays she has under her wing.

Mrs Spencer and her husband Dave left their home of 33 years at Drove Lane, Market Lavington, at New Year and have been working on their new feline rescue centre at a rural location between Devizes and Trowbridge.

Mrs Spencer said: "We did it all ourselves and it was exhausting. But the cats are all settled in now and we are back in business."

The new site has much more room for strays and cats needing re-homing. A huge purpose-built cattery is divided into homely cubicles where one or more cats can eat and rest.

Mrs Spencer also hopes that they will be able to wander in a huge enclosure that is to be set out on the site of a former Dutch barn next to the cattery.

Not all the cats at Kats and Kits are waiting to be re-homed. Mrs Spencer has adopted 24 who live in the new home she and Mr Spencer have built and another 22 cats, rescued from a pizza factory site in Trowbridge, will never be tame enough to go to an ordinary family and will probably end their days at Kats and Kits.

One of Mrs Spencer's cats that will spend the rest of his life at the home is Sprout, a Siamese cat who lost his tail in a road accident and been rendered incontinent as a result of his injuries.

Mrs Spencer said: "He is loving boy and will always have a home here."

Anyone who would like to volunteer to help Mrs Spencer at the refuge should ring her on (01380) 828850.
